Satin vinyl wrap sits between gloss and matte. Its soft sheen puts a gentle highlight along each body line instead of a sharp reflection, so the car looks finished without looking wet. If you like the frozen and magno paints that BMW Individual and Mercedes-Benz designo sell as factory options, satin is the closest wrap finish to that look. Our satin films include satin chrome, satin metallics, silk metallics, matte metallics and a solid satin white. Choose from grey, green, blue, purple, red, pink, gold, yellow, orange, white and near-black. Wrap the whole car or just the roof, hood or mirrors, and peel it off when you want your original paint back.

Satin Types Compared

All of these films have a soft, low-shine surface. What sits under that surface, and how much sheen it has, is what makes each type look and behave differently on a car.

Satin type What you see How it behaves on a car Shop
BMW M4 wrapped in Satin Crimson Red vinyl (VCH401-S)Satin ChromeVCH-S A silver metal layer under a satin top coat. It has the most glow of any satin here, and the color brightens in direct sun. It is a metalized film, so crumpling, overstretching or too much heat marks the metal layer. Work with gloves and a soft buffer, because the surface scratches more easily during install. Crimson Red (VCH401-S)
Emerald Green (VCH405-S)
Hot Pink (VCH404-S)
Gunmetal Grey (VCH410-S)
BMW wrapped in Satin Metallic Venetian Violet vinyl (SMT03)Satin MetallicSMT A fine metallic flake under a soft sheen, like factory metallic paint with the shine turned down. It is directional, and the flake can vary between production runs. Cut every panel the same way and order the whole job from one production LOT. Venetian Violet (SMT03)
Burnt Maroon (SMT02)
Apollo Grey (SMT06)
Rasant Blue (SMT07)
BMW wrapped in Satin Black Silver vinyl (HM02-R)Silk MetallicHM A dark base with fine silver flake under a silk sheen, a little softer than standard satin. It reads near solid in the shade and shows the metallic in direct sun. It is directional. The low sheen keeps swirl marks and fingerprints from showing, and it post-heats hotter than satin metallic. Black Silver (HM02-R)
Dark Gray Silk (HM01)
Green Black Silk (HM07)
Mercedes-Benz wrapped in Satin Gunsmoke Grey vinyl (ECH02)Matte MetallicECH A flat metallic or pearl with the lowest sheen in this collection. From a distance it reads like brushed metal. It is a 190 series film and needs matte care. Wax and gloss coatings leave shiny patches, and fuel or bird droppings should come off right away. Gunsmoke Grey (ECH02)
Charcoal Grey (ECH03)
Cherry Blossom Pink (ECH22)
Pearl White (ECH01)
Sports car wrapped in Satin White vinyl (CK903)Solid SatinCK903 One even color with a soft sheen and no flake. There is no flake to line up, but the satin surface is still directional, so cut every panel the same way. Road film and tar spots show first on white. Satin White (CK903)
Roll of Satin Yellow Lime training vinyl (VCH412-S)Training RollsVCH-S, SMT, ECH, HM Full 59 ft rolls of popular satin colors from aged stock. For practice and training only. They have no warranty and are not for customer vehicles. VCH412-S Training Roll

Satin vs Gloss vs Matte Vinyl Wrap

Satin is the right choice if you want something different from factory gloss without the upkeep of matte. If you want the easiest finish to keep clean, choose gloss. If your bodywork has dents or waves, matte hides them best.

Feature Satin Gloss Matte
Finish Soft, low shine Wet shine, like factory paint Flat, no shine
Dents and waves Hides small ones Shows them clearly Hides them best
Swirl marks Hard to see Easy to see None, but hand marks and stains show
Washing and care A little more care Easiest Most care, matte-safe products only

Satin Film Specs

Film Hybrid polymeric calendered vinyl. Satin Chrome (VCH) carries a silver metal layer. Matte Metallic (ECH) is 190 series.
Thickness 0.12-0.14 mm (4.7-5.5 mil)
Adhesive Henkel solvent acrylic with air-release channels. You can reposition it at first, and it reaches full bond in 24-48 hours.
Liner and cap Air-release liner, paper or clear PET depending on the series, with a protective cap on the face. Remove the cap before you install.
Conformability Flat and moderately curved panels. Use inlays for deep recesses.
Application temperature 17-23 °C (63-73 °F)
Post-heat 85-95 °C (185-203 °F) for Satin Metallic and Satin Chrome, 100 °C (212 °F) for Silk Metallic (HM) and Matte Metallic (ECH). Too much heat or stretch pushes satin toward gloss.
Outdoor durability Up to 3 years on vertical panels and about 2 years across a full wrap, depending on climate and care. Remove it within 2 years for the cleanest removal.
Rolls All are 5 ft (1.52 m) wide. Lengths are 16, 33, 49 and 59 ft (5, 10, 15 and 18 m), plus 75 ft (23 m) on one color. Some colors come in full 59 ft rolls only.
Shelf life 2 years at 10-20 °C (50-68 °F) and 50% humidity

Installing and Caring for Satin Vinyl

Satin stretches as easily as gloss, but it is much less forgiving to touch. Pressure, rubbing and too much heat flatten the surface and leave a shiny patch that will not come back. Installers call this burnishing. Use a soft squeegee with a fresh buffer, hold it low and flat, and never dry wipe a panel mid install. Satin is directional, so cut every panel the same way, and do not overstretch it, because stretched satin turns glossy. Our satin installation tips cover the full process. For a full car, a pro gets the cleanest result, and you can find a TeckWrap installer near you.

Satin is easier to live with than matte, but it still needs satin-safe products. Wait 48 hours before the first wash, then hand wash with two buckets and a pH-neutral, wax-free shampoo, and pat the car dry. Skip wax, polish, gloss enhancers and silicone products, because they leave shiny patches that do not come out. Door handle cups, the driver's door edge and the trunk lip slowly pick up some shine over the years. That is normal wear.

Satin Vinyl Wrap FAQ

How much satin vinyl do I need, and what does it cost?

A full 59 ft roll covers most sedans. SUVs, trucks and vans usually need more. Cut lengths start at $209 for 16 ft (5 m), and Satin Chrome starts at $279. Order the whole job plus about 20% from one production LOT, and check your vehicle with our material calculator. In the US, full rolls ship free with duties paid.

What is the difference between satin and matte wrap?

Sheen. Satin has a soft glow that runs along the body lines, and matte has almost none. Satin shows fewer hand marks and stains, so it is easier to keep clean. Matte looks flatter and hides dents better. Both need wax-free care.

Does satin vinyl hide dents and bodywork?

Better than gloss, but not as well as matte. Satin softens small waves and light marks, but its sheen still runs along each panel, so a dent can show when low sun hits it from the side. Repair real damage first.

Do you have a satin black wrap?

Our darkest satins carry a color or a metallic: Black Silver (HM02-R), Navy Black (ECH15), Boysenberry Black (SMT04) and Black Tulip (SMT22). For a plain black with a satin-like sheen, look at Raven Black (CM14) and Sable Black (TC01) in our matte collection. Both sit between matte and satin.

How long does a satin wrap last?

Up to 3 years outdoors on vertical panels and about 2 years across a full wrap, depending on your climate and care. The hood, roof and trunk take the most sun and age first. Parking under cover and a satin-rated ceramic coating both extend the finish.

Can I take a satin-wrapped car through a car wash?

Touchless washes are fine, and hand washing is better. Brush washes are not, because the brushes drag grit, lift edges and polish shiny patches into the finish. If you use a pressure washer, keep it at least 16 inches (40 cm) away and off the edges.

Can I ceramic coat a satin wrap?

Yes, with a coating made for matte and satin finishes. A standard gloss coating fills the surface texture and raises the sheen, and you end up with a blotchy semi-gloss panel that cannot be undone. Read the coating's technical sheet before you apply it.

Will satin go shiny, and can it be fixed?

In high-contact areas, slowly, yes. Door handle cups, the driver's door edge and the trunk lip pick up shine over time. That is wear, not a defect. A shiny or scratched patch cannot be fixed, because there is no clear coat to polish and heat will not restore the surface. Leaving the handle cups unwrapped, or doing them in gloss, avoids the most visible spot.

Can I install satin vinyl myself?

Yes, but satin is less forgiving than gloss. Pressure, rubbing and too much heat all leave shiny marks that will not come out. Practice on a mirror or spoiler first, or on a training roll. For a full car, use a professional installer, because the warranty requires professional installation. Find a wrap shop near you.

Is this cast or calendered film?

Calendered. Our satin films are hybrid polymeric calendered vinyl. Cast film is thinner, stretches further into deep recesses and carries a longer rating. Calendered film is thicker and stands up well to everyday knocks. If you plan to keep the same color for many years, a long-life cast film is the better fit.

Does a satin wrap protect paint from stone chips?

No. It protects paint from UV and light contact, but it does not stop stone chips. For chip protection, use clear PPF on the front end or color PPF instead of vinyl.

Will a satin wrap damage my paint when I remove it?

Not on sound factory paint, if you remove it within 2 years. Warm the panel first, then peel the film slowly at a low angle. Repainted or repaired panels can lift with the film.
