When conducting a vinyl film installation, templates can speed up the process and help you avoid unnecessary hassle. For example, if you cut the car wrap directly as you apply it to the surface, there are chances the giant panel will fold on itself, wrinkle, or pick up dirt from the ground.

Get the precise shapes

Precise templates require preparation. For the preparation stage, you can put the backing paper on the vehicle section you need to wrap. Use magnets to secure it in place, just as you directly handle a vinyl wrap film as usual. Then, draw the shape of the part on the liner. When drawing, leave three inches extra for the bleed. Repeat this process until you have drawn all the shapes you need.

Cut on a work table

Once you finish drawing, you can move to your work table. One of the advantages of using backing paper is that you have no need to worry about making bad cuts because the liners are wasted anyway and you have nothing to lose. Still, cutting on a work table makes everything smooth. You can simply cut along the shape you draw.

Next, it is time to place the templates on the vinyl wrap film. Handle them one by one. You can use masking tapes to secure them on the wrap surface. Then, cut precisely along the shape of the backing paper template. If you are cutting out materials for the passenger and driver sides, one template can help you finish both, which can also boost your installation efficiency.

Details you should consider

• Low surface energy wrap

For a high surface energy vinyl film like gloss, it is reliable to use masking tape to secure it with the template on the work table. But if you are wrapping with a low surface energy film like matte, you might need an extra method to keep it entirely in place.

• Sensitive material

If you are wrapping with a sensitive car wrap, carefully roll it out and approach it on your work table to avoid accidentally scratching its surface.

• Directional film

If you are installing a directional film, have a clear mind about the direction of the vinyl. And cut the material out accordingly so that everything can align when applied to the vehicle.

• Label everything

Remember to label each panel after you cut them out, so you clearly know which piece is for which section.
