What to Do When Edge of Vinyl Wrap Film Starts Lifting

As a vinyl wrap film wrapper, the ultimate goal is to achieve a paint-like finish. But sometimes, perfection does not come easily. You might figure out problems only after the whole vehicle has been wrapped, for example, the film becomes lifting on an edge.

Lifting can happen due to several reasons, including (but not limited to) careless cleaning during pre-install or overstretching the vinyl wrap film during wrapping.

It is absolutely going to be a nightmare if you have to re-do it, because it means a great cost of material and your precious time. Thus, it is best to fix it rather than re-start when you can – Mostly, you can make it up if the problem is not too severe.

To solve this problem, get your squeegee and a paper towel ready first. Put your squeegee in a paper towel, and soak the tip of it with a little mild surface cleaner to clean up the lifting edge of the vinyl wrap film. Do NOT use an aggressive cleaner as it will compromise the adhesive underneath the film. By doing this, the stickiness of the lifting edge can be brought back to some extent.

You can then use your heat gun to dry it out. Use just enough heat rather than a strong one. Once the film is dry again, use something thin, for example, the side of a thin plastic scraper to pick up the edge of the film.

Use a proper applicator to put a thin coat of adhesive promoter onto the body of the vehicle, where the edge of the film was covering up. Do NOT put it directly on the film. Retake your heat gun to apply mild heat to the surface with the promoter and dry it out, which will take a few minutes.

As soon as the adhesive is completely dry, you can then use the hard part of your squeegee to seal the edge, and the problem solved! It seems to be fixed easily. But it can even save you this time if you can make sure every approach is made properly as you wrap. Visit teckwrap.com for more wrap tips to achieve a perfect finish with high efficiency.
