Car wrapping. Use knifeless tape
Often, most wrappers would want to wrap a little farther inside the edge of the surface, especially when we come across a vehicle which is a light color.
However, it can always be tricky if we feed the car wrapping material in and cut on the body straight away, or… some would try going over with knifeless tape inside, which takes a relatively longer time and it would easily stretch the film in this case.
So how can we wrap a bit farther inside yet keep the install 100% safe? Today we will be looking at how to use knifeless tape to create a line on the OUTSIDE of the section you are wrapping to avoid those troubles.
For demonstration, we have a film on a trunk side that is about to be wrapped in the fender. We can use knifeless tape to make a line and create a gap on the outside of the section. By creating this gap, the film is going to feed deeper inside. This gap is about half an inch wide. If ever the paint side gets aggressive as we wrap – which depends on the type of car wrapping film we use, we can lower the surface energy to make it easier.
In this way, the material will not stretch or possibly be a tear. Put the masking tape down along the knifeless tape and cut it exactly on edge – Well, although it is the knifeless tape that is going to do the cutting, the masking tape will be pulled away anyway.
Once we put the car wrapping material on the surface, we can just cut the excess film away and tuck the material inside. It is going to be tucked in for another half inch deeper. Thus, it is going to look natural from whichever angle we take.
Even more, this technique can work on any install. Here we have another case study on roof wrapping with the aggressive film. Most people might use finish line with knifeless tape here, but we can use bridge line instead. Bridge line has a wider gap, so it is easier to wrap farther inside for another a quarter inch or so.
Of course, though, we can use different kinds of knifeless tapes for different purposes and different situations. But in this case, we can use the bridge line on the edge. And again, with aggressive film, we have to lower the surface energy on the section here.
The roof is wrapped in a normal way here. We can remove the backing paper and work on the material towards the back side. Once everything is done, go over the bridge line with a finger. And then we can flip it over and pull the string.
As we mentioned, different knifeless tapes are for different cases. For this one, the bridge line is usually for the breaks in between of a vehicle. And you would realize how much it helps during the application in this way.
Here we use it for a wider edge, and we have another half inch extra film to feed in. Just use our squeegee to glide the material in, which you will find it goes very smoothly now.
The bridge line also lowers the surface energy as well. We can pick it up easily on the top. Otherwise, the material is going to stick very aggressively in this case.
So these are some tricks to wrap farther inside vehicles without cutting on the body or putting knifeless tape inside – which can stretch the film. What you need are just knifeless tape, masking tape, squeegee, and a light-duty utility knife, and it will help you achieve your goal.
However, there are ways to do it besides the two cases we mentioned above, because as we said, the technique of using knifeless tape on the outside can be applied in different types of installations.
So always make sure you take the right way for the right situation. Apart from this, do not forget to think about what kind of material you are using, because it might make a huge difference in terms of application.
