Properties of matte film

.Matte wrap film has been on the list of wrappers’ and customers’ favorite for quite a long time. Considering its popularity, understanding clearly about the property of the matte film is very beneficial in many ways.

Matte wrap film is a standard wrap film that comes in a variety of different colors. It is non-directional, which means it can save you some time on checking the logo on the liner before applying because in whichever direction you apply, the color and hue will be uninformed still.

When squeegee, a soft squeegee should be used as matte wrap film is very sensitive. The edge of a soft squeegee can flex and avoid scratching. And again, for every install, it is a good habit to have a brand new wet or dry buffer for matte wrap film in order to maintain a perfect finish.

For the actual squeegeeing process, remember to avoid peaking the squeegee or using a high angle, because this can cause scratching. The key is to keep the squeegee at a low and flat angle to ensure that the edge of the buffer is uninformed side to side.

However, scratches can occur during or after the install, as matte wrap film has a very sensitive finish. For some scratches, they can be self-healed, but others not. This will depend on the depth of the scratch.

Also, during the install, wrinkles can occur with matte wrap film. If this happens, just pick the panel back up and apply light heat. This will trigger the memory effect and the wrinkles will self-heal, and the panel can be re-applied.

When heating the matte wrap film during install, avoid using a propane torch, and instead, using a heat gun. The reason why propane torch is risky is that if it is too closed to the surface or moved too slowly, the flame will gloss the matte finish.

When in need of heating and stretching, use just enough heat to soften the film and then pull evenly. Using too much heat or pull too much can cause the film to gloss, which is a clear indication that the film has gone past 10% stretch.

If overstretch does happen, instead of using a new piece, just pick the panel back up, and apply light heat. This will trigger the memory effect, which will cause the film to go back to its original shape and hue, which means the panel can be re-applied and the matte finish is preserved.

However, if the film becomes gloss because of using a propane torch, it will not self-heal as it does for a glossed film out of overstretching. And a new panel will have to be used.

Matte wrap film has low surface energy. So when it comes to inlays or overlays, the surface has to be prepped. One of the best ways to do this is to clean the base layer with a degreaser. Once it is dry, the top layer can be applied. By doing this, it will significantly help ensure the film’s long-term durability.

As for relief cuts that are in need when working around a rear subject or sharp angles, a standard relief cut can be made without worrying the film will be slipped unexpectedly. And for post-heating as well, a standard protocol can be applied.

Last but not least, aftercare is very important to preserve such a sensitive film like matte. In order to do this, all types of products can be used. For removing oil, degreaser and dedicated aftercare products can be very affected.

When in need of using ceramic coating, remember to make sure to use the right one in case it will gloss or change the color of the matte finish.
