COLOR SHIFT VINYL WRAP
Color shift vinyl wrap changes color as the light and your viewing angle change. One fender can read violet head on and turn green or gold where it curves away from you. Color shift is one of six finishes in our vehicle wrap line, and it covers chameleon metallics, silver base shifts, iridescent whites, pearls and a smooth blue to purple gradient. Wrap the whole car or just the roof, mirrors or spoiler, and peel it off when you want your original paint back.
Color Shift Types Compared
All of these films have a gloss surface. What sits under the gloss decides how many colors you see and how strong the shift looks on a car.
| Color shift type | What you see | How it behaves on a car | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
Chameleon MetallicRD-HD, RD-PRO-HD | Metallic flake that travels through three or more colors. Madeira Red moves from wine red to purple and copper, and Flame Purple adds teal and gold. | It is directional, and stretching changes the color. Cut every panel the same way and inlay deep recesses instead of pulling film into them. | Madeira Red (RD17-HD) Flame Purple (RD21PRO-HD) Rainbow Vortex (RD11-HD) Galaxy Green (RD15-HD) |
Silver Base ShiftDS-HD | A bright metallic base that warms or cools in the sun. Silver Sunset picks up pink, champagne and rose gold as the light moves. | In the shade it reads close to metallic paint, so the shift stays quiet until the sun hits it. It is directional. | Silver Sunset (DS03-HD) Azure Maya Blue (DS04-HD) |
Iridescent WhiteDCH-HD, RCH-HD | A clean white base with ultra-fine particles that flash blue, pink, gold and lavender in direct light. | Under cloud it reads as plain white. The flashes need sun or strong light, so check a sample outdoors before you choose. | Aurora White (DCH02-HD) Fireworks White (RCH03-HD) |
Pearl ChameleonCK-HD | A pearl tint over a light base, in white, cream rose, light blue, gold, lavender and frosted pearl. The shift is soft and stays close to the base color. | It is directional. It suits a full color change that should look close to factory pearl paint. | Pearl White (CK522-HD) Lavender Pearl (CK526-HD) Light Blue Pearl (CK524-HD) Frosted Pearl (CK527-HD) |
Gradient ShiftCK892G | A blue-violet pearl that slides from icy blue to deep purple with no hard line between the colors. | It is a calendered film with a 4-5 mm overlap. It is our lowest priced color shift, from $209 for 16 ft. | Purple Blue (CK892G) |
Subtle Metallic ShiftRB-HD | Fine metallic flake that moves between teal and blue-green. It is closest to BMW Atlantis Metallic. | The shift is small, so it reads like factory metallic paint. It is directional. | Palladian Blue (RB36-HD) |
Training RollCK892 | A practice roll of Purple Blue color shift in a matte finish, from aged stock. | For practice and training only. It has no warranty and is not for customer vehicles. | CK892 Training Roll |
Color Shift vs Gloss vs Chrome Vinyl Wrap
Color shift is the right choice when you want a full color change that moves with the light. For a finish that looks like factory paint, choose gloss. For the most reflection on part of the car, choose chrome.
| Feature | Color Shift | Gloss | Chrome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finish | Gloss with color that changes by angle | Wet shine, like factory paint | True mirror that reflects its surroundings |
| Full car wrap | Yes, with a professional installer | Yes, the easiest to install | Best on panels and accents |
| Stretch | Moderate, stretching changes the color | Good | Very little |
| Panel direction | Directional, cut every panel the same way | Most solid colors are non-directional | Mirror is non-directional, neo chrome is directional |
| Removal | With heat, within 2 years | With heat, within its rated life | Cold, within 1 year |
| Washing and care | Hand wash, swirls show like gloss | Easiest | Most care, hand wash only |

Installing and Caring for Color Shift Vinyl
Color shift installs much like gloss, with one big difference: stretch changes the color. A panel pulled harder than the rest lands on a different shade, and pieces cut in opposite directions off the roll catch light differently. Mark the direction on the liner, cut every panel the same way, and use inlays on bumpers and deep recesses instead of pulling the film into them. Post-heat every edge to 100 °C (212 °F), and wrap the whole car from one production LOT. For a full color change, find a TeckWrap installer near you who has worked with color shift film before.
Color shift needs the same gentle care as gloss. Wait 48 hours before the first wash, then hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and pat the car dry. Skip automatic washes, brushes, high-pressure washers, wax and solvents. The color effect is built into the film and does not wear off, but a hazed or scratched surface makes the shift look flat.

Color Shift Vinyl Wrap FAQ
How does color shift vinyl change color?
The pigments in the film reflect different colors at different angles. Head on, you see the face color. At a low angle, along body lines and around curves, you see the flip color. That is why a fender or bumper shows more of the shift than a flat door.
Will the color shift show on my car, or only in photos?
It shows wherever the panel curves. Fenders, bumpers, roof pillars and shoulder lines travel through the most color, while a flat van side stays close to one shade. Low, wide cars show more of the flip color than tall SUVs. Order a sample and hold it against a curved panel outside before you buy.
Can I wrap a whole car in color shift vinyl?
Yes. Every film here works for a full color change, and for roofs, mirrors and spoilers. A full car takes more planning than gloss, because every panel has to run in the same direction and deep recesses need inlays. We recommend a professional installer, and the warranty requires professional installation. Find a wrap shop near you.
How much color shift vinyl do I need, and what does it cost?
A full 59 ft roll covers most sedans. SUVs, trucks and vans usually need more. Cut lengths of 16 ft (5 m) start at $209 for Purple Blue (CK892G), $229 for the pearls and Palladian Blue, and $279 for the chameleon metallic, silver base and iridescent white films. Order the whole job plus about 20% from one production LOT, and check your vehicle with our material calculator. In the US, full rolls ship free with duties paid.
Why does one panel look a different color from the rest?
Stretch or direction. A panel that was pulled harder, or cut the other way off the roll, catches light at a different point in the shift. The fix is to rewrap that panel with film from the same LOT, cut in the same direction as the others.
How long does a color shift wrap last?
Up to 3 years outdoors on vertical panels and about 2 years across a full wrap, depending on your climate and care. The hood, roof and trunk take the most sun and age first. Parking under cover helps the film last longer.
Does the color shift fade over time?
The color effect is built into the film, so it does not wear off on its own. What dulls it is the surface. Brush washes, polish and gloss enhancers haze the top layer, and a hazed surface makes the shift look flat and grey. Hand washing keeps it sharp.
How do I wash a color shift wrap?
By hand, with a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft microfiber mitt, then pat it dry. Do not use automatic washes, brushes, high-pressure washers, wax or solvents. Rinse off fuel, bird droppings and tar as soon as you see them.
Can I install color shift vinyl myself?
Yes, if you have wrapped before. Color shift is less forgiving than solid gloss, because an overstretched panel changes color and stays that way. Start with a mirror cap or spoiler, or practice on our training roll. For a full car, use a professional installer to keep the warranty valid.
Is this cast or calendered film?
Calendered. Our color shift films are hybrid polymeric calendered vinyl. Cast film is thinner, stretches further into deep recesses and carries a longer rating. Calendered film is thicker and stands up well to everyday knocks. If you plan to keep the same color for many years, a long-life cast film is the better fit.
Does a color shift wrap protect paint from stone chips?
Will a color shift wrap damage my paint when I remove it?
Not on sound factory paint, if you remove it within 2 years. Warm the panel first, then peel the film slowly at a low angle. Repainted or repaired panels can lift with the film.
