The automotive industry in Indonesia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, contributing 10.16% of the GDP.
Overview
In 2017, Indonesia was the 17th largest passenger vehicle producer globally and the 5th largest passenger vehicle producer in Asia, producing 0.98 million vehicles.
In terms of market share, Japanese manufacturer Toyota has been leading the market in Indonesia for decades since the early 80s. In 2019, around 96.3% of cars and trucks sold in Indonesia were from Japanese brands, which is even higher than the proportion of Japanese brands in Japan, which stood at 90%.
The percentage of cars and trucks sold in Indonesia that consisted of MPVs, crossovers, and SUVs equipped with three rows of seats was 68%. The percentage is one of the highest in the world.
The Honda Brio was the best-selling passenger car in Indonesia in 2020 and 2022, while the Toyota Avanza was the best-selling passenger car in Indonesia between 2006 and 2019, and then in 2021.

Auto Shows in Indonesia
There are several auto shows in Indonesia. The GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) is one of the most popular. The 2023 edition of GIIAS is scheduled to be held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City.
