Automotive Market in Iran

The automotive industry in Iran is the third most active industry in the country, after its oil and gas industry, accounting for 10% of Iran’s GDP and 4% of the workforce. The sector directly employs about 500,000 people and many more in related industries.

Overview
Iran developed a significant automotive industry with annual production of up to 200,000 units under the Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s regime. But after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, production drastically decreased due to Iran–Iraq War and international sanctions.

Since the early 2000s, automobile production in Iran has grown exponentially. Iran’s automobile production crossed the one million mark in 2007 and 2008. Today, Iran is the 20th largest automaker in the world and one of the largest in Asia, with annual production of more than 1.6 million.

Popular Brands
According to a recent report by Focus2move, the Iranian automobile market is dominated by three leading brands: Saipa, Peugeot, and Iran Khodro. Saipa is the largest automaker in Iran, with a 40.3% market share. Peugeot comes in second with 30.7% market share. As for Iran Khodro, it is the third largest automaker in Iran.

According to a report by Research and Markets, the Iranian automotive market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR of 9.57% between 2023 and 2028, reaching a market size of USD 54.70 billion by 2028. The report also states that the automobile industry contributes around 10% to the GDP of Iran.
