Create overlap for steep license plate wrapping

Sections on vehicles vary from one another. An installer needs to read the area you are wrapping before applying the vinyl wrap film onto the surface. A different structure would lead to a different approach.

Likewise, there are different methods to handle a license plate area, depending on the look of the section. You can wrap up a wide and mellow one quickly in one piece of vinyl wrap film. But if you come across one with some 90-degree steep angles, you would know there is no way to wrap it in one piece.

It might seem tricky at first look. But with the right approach, you can create a long-lasting and high-quality finish with no stress. Here are some tips for you:

When you come across a license plate area with 90-degree sharp and steep angles, you can wrap the main bumper area first and leave the whole area for later.

Prepare a piece of vinyl wrap film that is bigger than the license plate area, and apply it onto the middle of the bumper and cover up the area. Use your squeegee to secure the material around the area and let the material bridge over the edges of it.

When the piece is tacked on the surface, you can sharpen your blade. Cut along the upper edge and the two edges on both sides of the license plate area. Make sure the tip of your knife is running parallel to the edges of the area, though. Remove the excess material after you cut.

Now you have basically made a relief cut there. So it becomes easy for your to tuck the vinyl wrap film into the flat surface inside the plate area. Use squeegee stroke to set the material well in place incrementally. And because you cut along the upper edge of the area, you now have slight extra material to feed into the upper corners.

When the vinyl wrap film is set in position on the inside area, run your finger along the bottom edge, and cut away the excess material at the bottom at last. Then, go over the entire plate area again with your finger and light heat, making sure everything is flat and secured in place.

By now, all you need is to get the gap on the inside done. Take a measurement and precut a strip piece to create an overlapping piece there. Take your time and lay the strip onto the gap, forming it around carefully. The edge of the strip should be put slightly under the top edge to hide the overlay. When it is done, use your finger and light heat again to ensure all the edges are set well and sealed.
